1906年4月18日凌晨，美国旧金山市发生里氏8.3级地震，导致3000多人死亡，25万人无家可归。地震及随后引发的大火使城市濒临彻底毁灭的边缘。
当年(1906年4月18日）美国旧金山地震，清朝政府一共捐出十四万两白银，其中十万两直接交给了美国驻华使臣，由他汇寄美国政府；另外四万两则汇交清朝出使美国大臣梁诚，由梁诚直接筹办旧金山受灾华侨、华人的救济事宜。
